Halal Street EATS - Season 1

Halal Street EATS was a collaborative project between Halal Street and The Curious Society. Our goal was to create stunning documentaries that highlight the best of halal food in Toronto.

With the first season, we wanted to highlight unique restaurant and home-based businesses - businesses that took Halal food to a new level.

We filmed the interior shots in Scarborough, Ontario, and filmed the outdoor shots on location.

Episodes

Episode 1: Zuhra’s Mantus

Mantus is an Afghan delicacy, and we heard amazing things about Zuhra’s Mantus.

This is an amazing home business based in Scarborough that serves one thing: Mantus.

Episode 2: Malai Murabba

Malai Murabba is something that many people from various countries really enjoy. Malai is similar to clotted cream, and Murabba is a type of jam. Malai Murabba is a business that sells their fresh Malai with their Mango Murabba.

This business is based in Toronto, but delivers their product directly to their customers. With this episode, we were able to interview Hani Mamdani, one of the founders of the business.

Episode 3: Northern Smokes

Northern Smokes has developed a massive reputation in a short time. It started out as a home business - a passion for smoking brisket, ribs and other meat - and then grew into a restaurant in Scarborough. We got to try their meat plate, which features their smoked brisket, ribs, smoked chicken, corn bread and tri-tip.

We filmed on location, and brought the food back to the studio.

Episode 4: Cassata Royale

Cassata is an East African take on ice cream; however, fans of Cassata will say that it’s completely different. Cassata Royale is a Richmond Hill-based home business that makes various types of Cassata.

We visited the home business and interviewed Ali Hemraj, the owner of Cassata Royale.
