Meet the Founder
Mateen Manek is a writer-director and educator based in Toronto, whose work is shaped by a simple but urgent belief: that life is extraordinarily beautiful, and that film is one of the few things that can actually show us that.
His roots are in theatre and writing — disciplines that taught him to put character and performance at the centre of everything, and to trust that the most specific, human stories are also the most universal. He works patiently and observationally, drawn to the quiet moments that other stories rush past.
Studio Rooh was born out of a concern he couldn't shake: that stories were getting shorter, that nuance was disappearing, that we were being encouraged to see difference before commonality. He started the studio not as a reaction to that, but as an alternative to it — a place where every life is treated as valuable, every story as worth telling with care.
He believes film, at its best, doesn't divide. It reminds us what we share.
