Our Short Script won an Audience Award
This news was so great, it ended up starting this blog page on our website.
A few months ago, we wrote a script called Dai Chokro. It follows a guy named Mehdi who gets set up by his brother and sister-in-law, but what he doesn’t realize is that it’s the same girl he ghosted 3 months back. And she’s not happy about it.
We submitted this script to the Rifelion pitch competition that happens every year at Mosquers Film Festival in Edmonton, Alberta. We got selected to be a finalist - which meant we had to pitch the project to a group of judges and a room-filled audience.
Luckily, Mateen - the founder of Studio Rooh - was formerly a teacher, so the pitch went great.
So great - in fact - that we walked away with the Audience Award!
What does this mean?
This means that we got some funding (and some validation) for this idea. But more importantly, we had a room of people who are excited to see this made.
So this means that our next project is going to be Dai Chokro.
Why is this important?
Films are a form of entertainment, but they’re also a way of sharing cultures. This is the first time Mateen has taken inspiration from his own culture and his own upbringing. That’s why the film is set within an East African/Indian community and takes place in Mateen’s hometown of Richmond Hill.
“Getting to tell stories centred around the people I grew up allows us to share who we are and our rich culture with others. Getting to look at the big screen and see people that are your people is important - and being able to do that means a lot.”
What’s Next
Right now, we’re getting things started. We're building out our crew and will start looking at casting within the next month. Once that's done, we’ll begin the production stage. We're still looking to secure a little more funding to get this project off the ground, but we're pretty excited about getting things started.
