You Need an About Me Page - Here's Why
This might seem like simple advice. However, it’s one that’s ignored completely or not done effectively.
So today, we’re talking about About Me pages (or About Us, if you’re a group of people).
Every time I find a new business, the first thing I’ll do is look up their website. If they don’t have a website, I’ll scan their Instagram or their Facebook.
Not too long ago, I found a marketing business that was in my area. I went to their website and immediately clicked on their About Me page.
And I didn’t learn a single new thing about them. So I clicked away.
Here’s typically where a lot of small businesses go wrong on their About Me page:
It doesn’t exist
It’s filled with very generic sentences that might sound nice but ultimately don’t tell me anything
It doesn’t tell me anything about the people behind the business or the people involved
It offers me no new information about the businesses’ story or anything ABOUT them
About Me pages aren’t the easiest to write. Writing about yourself is probably one of the most difficult writing tasks. But the reason why About Me pages are so important is because it’s the one time where you invite your customers and clients to learn more about you. To learn why they should trust you and why you’re the better option.
I hesitate to buy from websites when I don’t know who the founder is or if I don’t know anything about them. I feel as though there’s no one responsible to make sure my order will get to me.
I think you now get the importance of an About Me page. So let’s talk about what you can do to make your About Me section be impactful and effective.
Tell us the story of how your business got started. Why did you start your business? What problem are you trying to solve for your clients?
Give us the name and the picture of the founder of your business. It lets us know that there is someone who we can trust and rely on.
Avoid buzz phrases and generic sentences. Imagine if I walked up to you today and said “At The Curious Society, we offer video production services that will engage your audience and allow you to disseminate information at rapid speeds.” Would you continue talking to me? Probably not. This is your time to be vulnerable and open.
I only recently updated my About Me page and included many of these tips. It’s a work in progress, but you can check it out by clicking here!
Like I said, this isn’t a simple task. However, if you take some time today to work on it, it’ll really pay off.
