love letters to myself - poetry film

‘love letters to myself’ is a poetry book written by Sahara I. Mehdi, focusing on the theme of love, heartbreak and self-discovery. With this film, we wanted to capture Sahara’s thoughts on the idea of love, high school crushes and heartbreak, and also focus on how writing led to her self-discovery. One of our favourite parts of this film is when Sahara talks about ‘high school love’ and, though it’s so temporary and fleeting, it’s still real.

We filmed this mostly in Richmond Hill, Ontario, with the poetry performance at The Luna Studios in Toronto.

Frames From the Film

Sahara is standing on the ledge of the boardwalk, staring at the forest that surrounds her. This shot was taken from below the ledge, so we're looking up at her. This takes place in a small forest area in Richmond Hill.
In this shot, we see an envelope on a wooden table. Sahara writes on the envelope 'A Love Letter To Myself' with a heart next to it (this image is taken in the process, and only 'A Love Letter To is visible'). We can see the pen and her hands.
In this shot, Sahara is typing a poem on the typewriter.
