What Netflix's "The Queen's Gambit" Can Teach us about Marketing
If you haven’t heard by now, Netflix released a limited series called The Queen’s Gambit, a show about a girl’s journey to becoming a chess prodigy, in late October, and this show has quickly become one of the most successful shows on Netflix by breaking streaming records in 28 days.

But that’s not the part that stands out. The thing that’s really interesting is how it's affected its viewers.
Inquiries for chess sets are up 250% on eBay
Google search queries for “how to play chess” has hit an all-time high in 9 years
The number of new players on chess.com is about 5 times more than usual
What’s the takeaway from this? People want to know about what you do.
If you haven’t seen the show, it goes really in depth into the nuances of chess. It explains things really well without dumbing it down for the audience, and brings you into the world of professional chess players.
In a way, it makes chess look cool.
When people understand what you do beyond the surface level, they connect with it.
Chess has been around for many years, and it’s had a ton of media representation. What makes this different is it doesn’t try to make chess appeal to the audience. It makes the audience appeal to the magic of chess.
I personally believe that when people understand what makes something special, it’s really easy to appreciate it. When you understand the little details that go into something, the magic that goes into the art of it, people connect to it. As a matter of fact, they want to be a part of it.
It all comes down to being authentically you and communicating your passion for your craft.
With our clients, we work hard to understand who they are and what they do. When we understand why you’re so passionate about your work, we get passionate about our work. And a glimpse of passion makes anyone curious.
Bottom line? Share what you do! Share it in great detail!
Here are some ways you can do that:
Post some behind the scenes of your work
Have an educational series of marketing to help people understand more of what you do
Tell people why you love what you do
Show your work! Timelapses are a great way to show how your work transforms
These are just some general ideas, but they’re things you can implement today that will really help your marketing campaign.
