Unlock Your Creativity

Every profession uses creativity, but sadly, it isn’t something we can summon on command. Creativity often is spontaneous and comes at the last minute. Although some people believe some people are born with creativity while others are not, creativity actually works in a different way.

Creativity is like a muscle. It’s something you need to work on and practice to get better. The more situations that call for you to be creative, the more creative and the more outside the box your mind can think. A lot of it comes down to reflection and looking at all possibilities.

But there is one way to unlock your creativity, and it may sound strange. Actually, it’s going to sound crazy.

The way to unlock your creativity is by limiting yourself.

Creativity is not some super power. Creativity is a response to a complex problem. If you have a problem with no solution, you’re forced to think of different and unique ways of solving it. Sometimes, those new solutions are terrible, but most of the time they turn out to be better than what you could imagine.

Limits create problems, and problems create solutions. Creativity is simply finding unique and interesting solutions to those problems.

A lot of people come prepared for every solution possible, and that’s not a bad thing. But by preparing for every solution, you are limiting your creativity.

I’ve always found success when I’m limited because it forces you to look for alternatives. As a minimalist filmmaker, having very minimal gear allows me to think about what shots I can get and focus on the best result. I’m limited in terms of what I can capture, but that allows me to think of new ways of capturing shots. A few years ago while working on a film, we used a tripod to make a make-shit rig so that we could create moving shots (shout out to my awesome camera man for coming up with that solution).

Technology has broken a lot of limits for us. It’s allowed me to create short films and submit them to festivals. But it’s also made things a little bit too easy.

By embracing limits, we force ourselves into problems where we have to think of unique solutions.

And that’s how you unlock your creativity.
